Collection System Capital Improvement Plan Prepared by CDM Smith

SESD is working with an engineering company to prepare a 20-year capital needs assessment of our underground piping infrastructure that makes up our collection system. SESD owns and maintains approximately 29 miles of large diameter interceptor piping and forcemains that convey the wastewater from our member communities to our treatment facility in Salem. Most of this infrastructure is more than 50 years old and runs through environmentally sensitive areas including along the North River, Danvers River, and beneath Salem and Beverly Harbors.

The purpose of this Collection System Capital Improvement Plan is to establish priorities for SESD’s capital spending and conveyance infrastructure for the next 20-year planning cycle. The overall goals of the plan include a condition and life-cycle assessment of the SESD’s piping assets, assessment of system redundancy, and an assessment of impacts from climate change. The recommendations will be incorporated into a multi-phased capital improvements plan, also known as our Centennial Plan.
